Belgium won’t supply M109 self-propelled artillery to Ukraine.
This was reported by the Belgian edition De Morgen.
It is stated that the Ministry of Defense of the country is not able to buy them out.
According to sources, negotiations between the Ministry of Defense and the East Flemish company OIP Land Systems broke down due to the price of M109 ACS.
“It is very difficult to negotiate if the counterparty asks for ten times more than he paid for it,” the source said.
OIP, a subsidiary of which specializes in military equipment, also did not allow specialists of the Belgian army to check the status of M109.
OIP Land Systems, formerly known as SABIEX INTERNATIONAL, was founded in 1967 as a military surplus trading company and became a specialist in both development and modernization of a wide range of military transport platforms.
Recently, the Belgium Ministry of Defense reported that howitzers have already been sold to other customers which remain unknown. OIP does not want to comment on this issue.
“So there will be no deliveries, but this is not for fundamental reasons,” – said Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder.
The Belgian Ministry of Defense began getting rid of these howitzers in 2008.
Some of them were sold to Indonesia, and the rest were placed in an OIP hangar, and the company received them at a reduced price.
In April, the Belgian government decided to buy the howitzers back and immediately send them to the front in Eastern Ukraine.
