The Dutch military encountered unidentified drones during international exercises in Poland.
The Dutch Ministry of Defense confirmed this to NOS.
A Defense Ministry representative also mentioned that, in addition to detecting unknown drones, communication between soldiers was hampered.
The Ministry noted that the military did not have any UAV defense systems on them at the time.
The systems were delivered from the Netherlands shortly after the incidents were reported.
“There was no immediate threat. We are quite far from the Russian border. We realized this immediately and adapted immediately,” Brigadier General Frank Grandia reported.
The small drones reportedly appeared unexpectedly when the military was setting up camp at the airfield.
An airmobile brigade of the Netherlands Armed Forces has been in Poland in recent weeks for NATO’s Falcon Autumn exercise. The United States, among others, is also participating in the large-scale air maneuvers.
After the incidents, the exercises were changed but not canceled. So far, it has not been possible to identify who is behind the use of drones and communication disruptions.
“We know that there are parties that are extremely interested in what we are doing and are monitoring the exercises,” Grandia stated.
In addition to Poland, unidentified drones have been spotted in Denmark, Norway, Germany, and other European countries. Their flights have caused airports to suspend operations.
The Czech military has also been recording more and more cases of UAVs flying over its own military installations and important infrastructure.
Thales Belgium, one of Europe’s largest defense companies, reported that it is tracking an increase in the number of unidentified drones flying over its classified facilities.
