The United States is trying to prevent Iran from providing drones to Russia.
The New York Times reported this with reference to its own sources.
The Biden administration has embarked on a broad effort to halt Iran’s ability to produce and deliver drones to Russia to be used in the war in Ukraine.
The White House has accelerated its moves to deprive Iran of the Western-made components needed to manufacture the drones sold to Russia after it became apparent from examining the wreckage of intercepted drones that they are stuffed with made-in-America technology.
In addition, the NYT notes that the US military is helping the Ukrainian Armed Forces to target the sites where the Russians are preparing Iranian kamikaze drones for launch.
According to the American publication, this is a difficult task because the invaders are constantly changing their positions and using civilian objects such as football fields or parking lots.
The Americans are rushing in new technologies designed to offer early warning of approaching drone swarms and to improve Ukraine’s chances of bringing them down.
As previously reported, Kyrylo Budanov, Head of the Defence Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced that in the summer, Russia reached an agreement with Iran to supply 1,700 Shahed loitering munitions.
Budanov mentioned that Russia is also counting on Tehran to replenish its missile arsenal.
To persuade Iran to support the effort, Russia has offered technologies to the Iranian military industry. However, according to the Head of the Defence Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Tehran has been slow to hand over missiles.
In November, it was reported that Moscow made an agreement with Tehran to produce Iranian unmanned combat aerial vehicles in Russia.
Later, reports appeared in the Western media that Iran had started the process of transferring blueprints and drone components to Russia.
