The American defense company General Dynamics Land Systems released the first video capturing the prototype of the next-generation AbramsX tank.
A video combining 3D-graphic and footage of the viable technology demonstrator was published on the GDLS Youtube channel.
In the description of the video, the company claims that AbramsX is lighter than previous versions of M1 Abrams tanks. Currently, one of the newest versions of M1 Abrams SEPv3 weighs 73 tons, which significantly limits its transportation ability.
Due to the hybrid engine, the AbramsX would consume half the fuel as the previous version. The message states that a hybrid engine would also help in providing the noise disguise.
Military Matters suggests a hybrid power plant will be designed based on the latest Cummins Advanced Combat Engine. This is a modular system that allows obtaining power efficiency between 750 and 1500 hp depending on the number of cylinders (3, 4, or 6).
The crew of the tank also became smaller (the number of crew members is not indicated, but the previous versions of the M1 Abrams required a crew of four).
Observers believe that a new 120mm XM360 gun was installed on the tank. The War Zone shared that the tank also has a Kongsberg Protector RS6 Remote Weapon Station (RWS) 30mm autocannon.
AbramsX is probably equipped with an integrated Trophy active protection system.
The tank has modules with optical and infrared sensors for the commander and gunner. The footage shows video cameras integrated into the hull of the tank, which will probably give the opportunity to have a 360-degree view. The War Zone suggests that the image, along with elements of augmented reality, will be broadcasted to the screen installed in a crew helmet.
General Dynamics claims that AbramsX will apply artificial intelligence technologies, although did not provide further clarification.
AbramsX is an intermediate between the latest versions of the M1 Abrams SEPv4 and the US Army`s future tank.
This year, the European defense companies presented their future tank concepts. In particular, EMBT (Enhanced Main Battle Tank) was demonstrated – a joint project of the French Nexter and the German Krauss Maffei Wegmann. The German concern Rheinmetall had also demonstrated a new innovative Panther KF51 tank.
